Charles Burton Martin, 1924 - 2008 

Charles Burton Martin, beloved husband of Olga Borysuk Martin, passed away peacefully at the Sunnyside Nursing Home in Medicine Hat, Alberta on Thursday, October 23, 2008.  He was 84 years old.

Already well known for his book Religious Belief (Cornell UP, 1959), Martin came to the University of Calgary from the University of Sydney (Australia) in 1971 as Professor of Philosophy and Head of the Department of Philosophy.  He retired in 2001 and moved to Medicine Hat shortly thereafter. 

Over the years Martin published major contributions in the studies of metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of language, and John Locke.  A special area of interest in later years was neuroscience.  His last book, The Mind in Nature (Oxford UP, 2008) appeared this year and is fast gaining attention.  In a Times Literary Supplement review, Simon Blackburn called it "provocative, rich, useful and infuriating."

C. B. Martin was a forceful voice in philosophy who will be missed especially by his colleagues and friends at the University of Calgary.
